Haydn: Dialogues feat. inti figgis-vizueta — The Cramer Quartet Saturday, March 28 · 7:00–9:00PM · the cell · Manhattan · $35 General Admission
Some projects are too large for a single season. Haydn: Dialogues is one of them.
Over the course of ten seasons, concluding in 2032 — Haydn's 300th birth anniversary — the Cramer Quartet is performing all 68 of Haydn's string quartets alongside newly commissioned works by American composers, each written for historical instruments, each a response to a specific Haydn opus in the composer's own voice. It is one of the most ambitious chamber music undertakings currently happening in New York City.
This installment pairs Haydn's String Quartet in D Major, Op. 71, No. 2 with a new work by inti figgis-vizueta — a composer the LA Times calls "an ever-intriguing, rising new music star," whose work the New York Times describes as carrying "a sense of true dramatic stakes." inti has been commissioned by the Los Angeles Philharmonic, Boston Symphony, Cincinnati Symphony, Kronos Quartet, and JACK Quartet, and her music has appeared at Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, the Kennedy Center, Walt Disney Concert Hall, and concert halls across Europe. She is the recipient of the 2026 United States Artists Fellowship, among many other honors.
The program opens with a string quartet by Hyacinthe Jadin — a composer of remarkable gifts who died in 1800 at the age of 28.
The Cramer Quartet — Jessica Park and Kate Goddard on violin, Maren Rothfritz on viola, and Michael Unterman on violoncello — has performed at the Morgan Library, Music Mountain Summer Festival (as the first period instrument ensemble in the series' 92-year history), and Festival de Música de Santa Catarina in Brazil. The ensemble is supported by the New York State Council on the Arts, the Copland Foundation, and is the recipient of Chamber Music America's Ensemble Forward Grant.
