Why we’re called Four Hands

People ask how we got our name. The name happened right on the stage.

It was our first show. We'd planned the whole thing in about ten days, booked the Triad Theater for the Monday after Thanksgiving, and started selling tickets to our community. The audience came on faith. So did we.

Pianist Antongiulio Foti was our music director and leader of the house band. Matt Baker had come to accompany a singer. The two had never met.

Near the end of the second set, without telling anyone, they did something that wasn't part of the rehearsal.

They sat down together at the piano and played "Someday My Prince Will Come." Four hands on one keyboard. Just two up-until-then strangers listening to each other close enough to create something in real time. It was a thrill to watch them passing the melody back and forth, making room for each other's hands, improvising a conversation.

I was standing at the back of the room, and I heard people catch their breath. You could feel something happening right on the stage. Strangers becoming brothers. It was magic. And it gave us our name.

Four hands. Two people making something together that neither could have made alone.

The name isn’t just about what happens at the piano. It’s about how hands come together to form a community of people making room for each other, all listening closely enough to build something no one could make alone. The artist and the audience. The neighbor and the stranger who becomes a friend. The Upper West Siders who sit down on a sidewalk bench over a cup of coffee and share their stories, and their hearts.

We’ve learned show after show that the music doesn't happen at you. It happens between people.

Between the players. Between the stage and the room. When everyone’s really listening, something new emerges. Something that reminds us we belong to each other.

Two strangers sat down at one piano and trusted each other enough to make something beautiful. That's the community we're trying to build. Born on a coffee shop bench, brought to life on a piano bench.

That's why we're called Four Hands.
